Hi,

This new list is very similar to what we have been using so far. Ellen
wants everyone to use this list instead of the list hosted in the CS
Server. This new list is called "mcs". In the old system we have 2
different lists called 122 & 180. In this list we have 2 threads or
conversations called 180 & 122 which are part of the "mcs" list. The
advantage of using this list, is that you can create own your
conversation or threads. Please visit
http://systers.mills.edu/mailman/listinfo/mcs on details on how to start
a new conversation. If some one starts conversations such as say 'java'
& 'c'. Suppose say some of us are not interested in the mails from the
'c' conversation, you have an option of unsubscribing from the 'c'
conversation alone. This is a very useful feature if you feel that your
mail box is bombarded with mails from conversations that you are not
interested in. Hope everyone enjoys using the new list.

Prem.

Dear All,=20

=20

There is now a BinaryExpressionNode.java in place. It consolidates code =
that
all binary expressions use and offers the following:

=20

      /** A binary expression's left child value */

      Object leftValue =3D null;

      /** A binary expression right child value */

      Object rightValue =3D null;

}

      /** Populates the child value fields in this class=20

        * and provides type mismatch checking that all

        * binary expressions support.*/

      public void getChildren() throws BasicError ;

=20

      /** This function returns a boolean

        * after confirming that both child values are

        * numbers. Should only be called after calling=20

        * getChildren().

        */

      public boolean bothNumbers() ;

=20

      /** This function returns a boolean

        * after confirming that both child values are

        * Strings. Should only be called after calling=20

        * getChildren().

        */

      public boolean bothStrings() ;

=20

Have a look at how the files NodeAdd.java, NodeSubtract.java,
NodeMultiply.java and NodeDivide.java now inherit from this abstract =
class
and use the shared code.

I just checked out the files from the repository and tried a build. It
failed during the test phase, as shown below. Who broke the build? I
confessed when I was the guilty party...

I was just wondering if people are able to sign onto irc yesterday or
today. Has anyone tried from on campus? I haven't been able to get on
from stern 35 or my dorm and was wondering if it was all of irc or if
the school server is doing something to cause the problem.

I couldn't get on from lab yesterday but can get on from home. I'm on right
now from home. I believe Amy L was having the same trouble from the lab
yesterday.

Hi,

I have seen that many of you have tried to send in mails to the list
from emails other than the ones registered by default. To do this you
would need to add the other email id's to your preferences. To do this
visit http://systers.mills.edu/mailman/listinfo/mcs . Log in with your
current registered email & the password provided to you (if you have not
changed it, look in you welcome mail ). Fill in your preferred email
id's in the "Other incoming email address" & save your changes. You are
all set to send in mails from the other id's now.

Prem.

Prem.

Hi,

With CVS, you can checkout stuff by date - say you want to get the
version from 6:30pm yesterday, you can type:
cvs checkout -D "2003/04/17 18:30:00" basic

I checked out out the version from 6:30pm yesterday, and it builds
fine. I also checked out the version from 7:30pm yesterday, and it
doesn't - you get the error that Ellen mentioned.

Perhaps this is a clue for someone who checked in some stuff around
6:30 or 7 yesterday?

You can also check the log to see who has checked things in lately, but
in the logs the date/time stamp is GMT, so you need to subtract 7 hours
(I think) to figure when it was our time. Sort of confusing.

Amy

There is one "mcs" mailing list on systers.mills.edu. Several
conversations exist on it, including "mcs+122" and "mcs+180". If you
want a message to go to everyone, send it to
"mcs+new@systers.mills.edu", which will create a new conversation, which
everyone will see. For more information, see
"http://systers.mills.edu/mailman/listinfo/mcs" or the email you got
when you were subscribed.

Please let me know if you have any questions. This new mailing list
system is my research project. Prem is working with me on it.

Ellen

One of the real Applesoft BASIC programs I downloaded from the Internet
runs under our interpreter! The program (complete with original
spelling) is listed below and can be found in tests/PigLatin.basic. I
ran it from my basic directory as follows:

java applesoft.ParserUtilities applesoft/tests/PigLatin.basic

I'll send more instructions soon about the remainder of the semester.

It's in /usr/local/java/docs. From any Linux client in the lab, launch
your favorite web browser and open

/usr/local/java/docs/api/allclasses-frame.html

for the page with the list of all classes.

Everyone should have their assigned portion of the interpreter
implemented and checked in by Monday, 10 AM. This includes working test
cases, of course. You do not need to turn in printouts of code,
javadoc, and tests, since I can find them online. Do turn in a
discussion of problems encountered, design decisions, why you believe
your code is correct, etc.

We need to agree on what level of javadoc to provide. For starters,
people should include their names after a "@created" tag. What else do
people think should be included as javadoc?

There will be a MCS 280 assignment and meeting this Friday, details TBA.

There are a few directions in which to proceed.

1. Testing our interpreter with real Applesoft BASIC programs. I placed
a few in the tests directory, using the extension ".basic". One works
perfectly (PigLatin.basic). Another failed (BirthYear.basic). (The
failure involved INPUT of a real number.) During the next few days,
everyone should look for Applesoft BASIC programs on the Internet.
While I provide a number of links on the course web page, I recommend
you use the archive searcher in Apple II Oasis (the emulator I
encouraged you to install). To export the program from the Apple-format
disk to ASCII, use a2tools (pointed to from the course web page).

2. Adding functionality that makes it easier to test and run programs.
This is a relatively simple tasks that will improve life for everyone on
the team. It can provide a text interface (like ParserUtilities) or a
GUI (like the last MCS 280 assignment). Any volunteers?

3. Adding support for more BASIC statements, such as:
- Text formatting: HOME, VTAB, HTAB, SPC, TAB
- Lo-resolution graphics: GR, PLOT, COLOR, HLIN, VLIN
- Sound effects: PEEKs and POKEs of certain specific locations
- Limited function definitions: DEF, FN
- Hi-resolution graphics: HGR, HCOLOR, HPLOT
- Support for game paddles
- Whatever's required for programs we find and want to run
Anybody feel that they haven't done their fair share yet or eager to do
more? Anyone want to take part in a communal hacking session next
weekend? I'd come and bring food.

4. Refactoring code. Improving the clarity of your or anyone else's
code and removing duplication would be a major contribution. The tests
should ensure you don't add any bugs.

On Tuesday, I will lecture on:
- The program methodology we've been (mostly) using: Extreme Programming
- My parts of the interpreter

In subsequent classes, you will be expected to present details of your
implementation that would be of interest to your teammates.

Ellen

Sorry about the error Eric and class. I don't quite understand why it
happened because I was able to build fine. But the DEBUG is out (I
added it at the last minute. It's insignificant). Please contact me
if you need. I am currently on IRC.

Eric,

I just checked out a clean build and it built successfully (although the
parser reports 3 warnings as it has for some days). Please let me know
ASAP if your errors continue. Call me at 510/528-2468.

Hi, I'm working from home this morning. I'd really appreciate knowing
the result of the following program:

10 DATA 1.1
20 READ A
30 PRINT A

My question is, does it report '? SYNTAX ERROR', or print a '1'?

Thanks!

In our program, it prints a '1'. Does Applesoft BASIC do the same thing?

E.g., if you read a float into an integer-identifier, does it accept it
and truncate the value to an integer?

Thanks! Paul

MCS 280 students should read the rest of Chapter 14 (Creating Windows in
Applet) in Thinking in Java and create a GUI for the BASIC interpreter.
 You may use a GUI builder. You are encouraged to work in teams of at
least two.

If you feel that your piece of the interpreter was disproportionately
large, speak to me about being excused from this assignment.

Dear All,

One thing that we need to test our INPUT statement is to alter the test
program to look to a file (foo.in) for any expected input to a particular
foo.bas which contains n INPUT statements.

I am overwhelmed at the moment with work, so if anyone has the time to do
this before I can get to it, please feel free.

I assume you mean javadoc comments? If so, see
NodeAssignmentStatement.java and NodeConditionalStatement.java.

FYI, you can see the javadoc at "http://cs.mills.edu/180/api/". It's
generated when I type "ant document".

Dear All,

What I did:
-----------
I created a directory in my home folder called basicGUI. Then I put a file
in it as a stub for the project.

Then on a command line, I typed:

cd ~/basicGUI

to point the present working directory (pwd) to this one

then I typed

cvs import basic/basicGUI devel alpha

where "cvs import" imports the pwd to a new subdirectory under our basic
project. "devel" is the group working on it and is a tag. "alpha" is the
project state and is a tag.

Result:
-------

When you do a cvs update in your basic project, you will automatically get
the new part of the tree.

Please email me with any queries.

Barton

Hi,

Stephanie and I implemented the user interface layout for the basic GUI. The file chooser is working, along with the ant stuff from my previous ant GUI.

I checked it in to the CVS repository.

I *think* you can check it out by typing:
cvs checkout basic/basicGUI

Stephanie: Feel free to change the layout to your liking

Tu: You may want to look into the Ant API

Anybody who's interested: the javadoc may be inconsistent at this point since we modified pre-existing code - it would be cool to edit this

There is a build.xml file in the basicGUI directory. It's pretty
simple, so feel free to modify it.

Also, to check out the GUI stuff from CVS, just type:
cvs checkout basic

Dear All,

I linked the files Lisa put up tonight to the package basicGUI; please make
sure you put this at the top of all your files for this project.

Also, I added this package to the set of targets in the build.xml file for
the main applesoft package. Whenever anyone types "ant document" inside of
the applesoft directory, documentation for the applesoft, utils, and
basicGUI are generated.

Barton
